Dubula Mbatha, a 32-year-old TikTok personality and avid fan of maskandi music, met a tragic end after a controversial social media feud.
Known for his outspoken online persona, Mbatha had previously insulted a prominent Durban taxi boss in a TikTok video.
He referred to the taxi owner, Sikhakhane, as “a little boy,” drawing public attention and concern for his safety.
Sikhakhane, who recently played a pivotal role in the Durban Long Distance Taxi Association’s strike, did not respond publicly to the remarks.
In an attempt to de-escalate the tension, Mbatha later issued a public apology, addressing Sikhakhane as his “older brother” and expressing regret for his words.
Despite this gesture, concerns lingered about potential retaliation.
The Fatal Shooting
On Sunday, December 10, 2024, Mbatha was visiting friends near Jules Hostel in Jeppestown, Johannesburg.
While at a Sasol petrol station, an unidentified gunman opened fire, shooting him 16 times. Emergency services rushed Mbatha to the nearest hospital, but he succumbed to his injuries.
Eyewitnesses reported that the attack was sudden and calculated. “Dubula was rushed to the hospital, but unfortunately, we heard this morning that he passed away from his gunshot wounds,” a source shared with Scrolla.Africa.
Motive and Investigation
While the motive remains unclear, speculation surrounds Mbatha’s history of online conflicts. Beyond his feud with Sikhakhane, Mbatha was notorious for targeting individuals who criticized maskandi musician Mthandeni “Gcokama Elisha” Mdletshe.
These public confrontations made him a polarizing figure, possibly leading to multiple enemies.
The South African Police Service (SAPS) has launched a murder investigation. Lieutenant Colonel Mavela Masondo confirmed that authorities are actively searching for the suspects. “The motive is currently unknown.
We urge anyone with information to contact their nearest police station or Crime Stop at 08600 10111,” he stated.
Community Reactions and Concerns
Mbatha’s death has sent shockwaves through the community, raising questions about the dangers of online disputes and the extent to which words can escalate into violence.
Many have expressed sorrow over his untimely demise while urging caution in navigating social media conflicts.
Some speculate that Mbatha’s controversial online presence contributed to the attack. Others argue that the incident underscores deeper societal issues, including the influence of powerful individuals and unresolved tensions within communities.
Conclusion
The tragic death of Dubula Mbatha serves as a grim reminder of the potential consequences of public disputes, especially in a digital age where insults can have far-reaching effects.
As investigations continue, the community mourns the loss of a vibrant, albeit contentious, figure. Authorities are determined to bring justice for Mbatha and uncover the truth behind this shocking act of violence.
For any leads, the SAPS urges individuals to step forward and assist in their pursuit of the perpetrators.
